Hi,
I would like to know if Dry Chemical Fire Extinguisher has Expiration and if it has to be re-filled every year?
Same goes with HCFC and Halotron fire extinguishers.
Also, can the Safety Officer do the yearly checking or Preventive Maintenance?
Thank you so much.

Dear Marge Ramos,
The chemical inside our portable fire extinguishers, ammonium hydrogen phosphate, has no expiration. However, the extinguisher may be subject to shifts in temperature that may cake the chemical inside, preventing it to be propelled by pressurized air.
Three things are being maintained in issued fire extinguishers (1) the pressure, when to needle indicator is on the green area of the gauge, (2) tank integrity, if there is no rust and the strength of its structure is still sufficient, and (3) if the chemical is still on its powder form inside.
The maintenance of HCFC extinguishers is almost the same.
The fire code specifies that extinguishers should be at least 1 meter from the ground to keep them away from shits in temperature and moisture, effectively lengthening its service life.
As for the query if your safety officer is authorized to conduct the safety inspection or not, there is a tag that specifies the last maintenance schedule done by that fire extinguisher. As far as we know, that is filled up by the extinguisher refiller/maintenance company.
We apologize for the delay in answering your query. We have just reactivated our portal recently.
