Hi! I would like to request information and seek insights from the National Center for Mental Health for thesis purposes.
Palliative Psychiatry is a growing subspecialty within psychiatry that specifically addresses patients suffering from Severe and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI). A study stated that some patients develop SPMI that is therapy-refractory. Palliative Psychiatry aims to prevent and alleviate suffering, particularly when curative treatments are unattainable.

1. Do a significant number of patients at this facility have severe and persistent mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder?
2. Do these patients have a dedicated pavilion/building, along with specific activities, therapies, and services tailored to their needs?
3. Can mental disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder be cured?
4. What are the most common treatment approaches employed? Additionally, what services are provided to these patients during the advanced stages of their illness?
5. Are schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder considered terminal illnesses? At what age do patients typically develop comorbidities?
6. What is the average duration of hospital stays for these patients?
7. Do you encounter cases of treatment resistance among these patients, and if so, how are they managed?
8. What specific challenges do patients with severe and persistent mental illnesses face in their daily lives, and how does the current treatment approach address these challenges?
9. In the context of severe and persistent mental illnesses, how does the hospital address the ethical considerations surrounding potentially futile medical interventions, and what criteria are used to determine the appropriateness of different treatment modalities for individual patients?
10. Can you provide insights into the impact of environmental factors on the mental health of patients, and how are these factors considered in the treatment plans?
11. Considering the number of evidence-based studies on this subspecialty, do you believe that a palliative approach is suitable for patients with severe, chronic, and treatment-resistant mental illnesses?
12. Numerous studies have shown that integrating palliative care into the treatment plans of SPMI patients can significantly reduce risks, rehospitalization, and improve the quality of life among these patients. In the near future, is there a possibility or consideration of incorporating this subspecialty among the other services offered at the NCMH?
