Dear Karlo Hopia,

Greetings!

Thank you for your request dated Jan 14, 2021 02:06:49 PM under Executive Order No. 2 (s. 2016) on Freedom of Information in the Executive Branch.

Your Request

You asked for Miracle Sugarcane "Malimama.

Response to Request

Your FOI request is approved.

Based on records from the Research office, there is no researches conducted with regards to the so-called Malimama considered as the miracle sugar. However, Dr. Moraca’s involvement to sugarcane research is through its Small-Scale Community-Based Muscovado Sugar production and Marketing wherein a part of his discussion is the future prospect of Malimama in Muscovado Sugar Production.

In response to your thoughts with regards to the identity of Malimama and Badila, as a researcher with background on genetic resources and management, I would suggest to collect planting materials of the identified Malimama variety and Badila variety from sugarcane farmers, characterize them through morphological, agronomical, physiological characterization and if budget warrants you can have it DNA analysis, it is only then that you can establish the identify of a variety.

If you are unhappy with this response to your FOI request, you may ask us to carry out an internal review of the response by writing to cpsu_main@cpsu.edu.ph. Your review request should explain why you are dissatisfied with this response, and should be made within 15 calendar days from the date when you received this letter. We will complete the review and tell you the result within 30 calendar days from the date when we receive your review request.

If you are not satisfied with the result of the review, you then have the right to appeal to the Office of the President under Administrative Order No. 22 (s. 2011).

Thank you.

Respectfully,

Aladino Moraca
