Can you send us 1) a list of irradiation facilities/plants in the Philippines and 2) How can we have an Irradiation Facility here in Bicol Region?

Thank you

Dear Harry King Avenido,

Greetings!

Thank you for your request dated Jan 18, 2023 08:06:53 PM under Executive Order No. 2 (s. 2016) on Freedom of Information in the Executive Branch.

Your FOI request is approved. Enclosed are digital copies of information materials pertaining to some of the information you requested.

Here at the PNRI compound in Quezon City, we have two major irradiation facilities: the Cobalt-60 Multipurpose Irradiation Facility, which was established in 1989 and is currently being upgraded into a fully-automated facility, and the Electron Beam Irradiation Facility. These facilities are used for food irradiation, sterilization of medical products and other raw materials.

We also have two smaller-scale irradiators for smaller volumes of samples or for research purposes. These are the Gammacell-220 and Ob-servo Sanguis self-shielded Gamma irradiators.

Below is the link to the current irradiation services available at PNRI:

Other facilities historically used previously as irradiation facilities, particularly for research purposes, include those under the Philippine Research Reactor - 1 and the Cobalt-60 Gamma Garden, then under the Philippine Atomic Energy Commission (now PNRI).

At the same time, companies are also considering, if not already establishing, their own commercial irradiation facilities.

You may refer to these articles for current developments:

PNRI continues to encourage the private sector to establish commercial irradiation facilities across the Philippines, which will contribute to the country's industrial competitiveness and national development.

Thank you.

Respectfully,

Hans Joshua Dantes
