Dear Selena Patricia Campañer,

Greetings!

Thank you for your request dated Dec 14, 2023 02:38:29 PM under Executive Order No. 2 (s. 2016) on Freedom of Information in the Executive Branch.

Here is our response:

1. size of protected areas (size, location, geographical boundaries)

Response:
Since the request includes geographical boundaries we suggest that you check the map of the NIPAS protected areas available at the Philippine Geoportal thru the link https://www.geoportal.gov.ph/. You may filter your request by selecting the National Integrated Protected Area System in the "Layers".

2. reason for protection

Response:
There are several reasons:
a. Section 16, Article II of the Philippine Constitution: The State shall protect and advance the right of the people to a balanced and healthful ecology in accord with the rhythm and harmony of nature.

b. DENR Mandate (E.O. 192, s. 1987) – Reorganization of the DENR: The Conservation of specific terrestrial and marine areas representative of the Philippine natural and cultural heritage for present and future generations.

c. From existing policies especially from section 2 of RA11038 and from the Wildlife Act

d. International Commitments where the Philippines is a signatory (CITES, CBD, KM-GBF)

3. The number of reported poaching incidents in protected areas

Response:
We do not have a compiled database on illegal poaching in PAs. We only get to know of these illegal activities if the PAMO chose to report to us or through PAMB minutes of meeting.

Thank you.
