Crop waste Management - Rice Straw

Requested from PhilRice by J. Casanova at 03:25 PM on Nov 22, 2023.
Purpose: mitigating climate change
Date of Coverage: 11/21/2023 - 11/22/2023
Tracking no: #PhilRice-396436127056

Casanova 03:25 PM, Nov 22, 2023

I would like to request information about how to collect rice straw in The Philippines. The purpose is avoiding it to burned out or left decompose, and transform it into biochar, which is a powerful fertiliser that sequester carbon dioxide instead of letting it pullote the atmosphere.

Dear Jose Miguel Casanova,

Greetings!

Thank you for your request dated Nov 22, 2023 03:25:29 PM under Executive Order No. 2 (s. 2016) on Freedom of Information in the Executive Branch.

Your Request

You asked for Crop waste Management - Rice Straw.

Response to Request

Your FOI request is approved. Dr. Paulino Ramos, one of our experts in our rice engineering and mechanization division, responded to you directly in your email.

Actually with the mechanized harvesting using the Combine harvester , most of the farmers especially in Central Luzon have no choice just to incorporate the rice straw in the soil during land preparation. Collecting it from the field is very difficult because rice straw was already chopped into small part. Because of the harvesting machine, the burning of rice straw from the field already minimized.

We hope that the information help you... Do not hesitate to ask again if you have clarifications..

Thank you very much.
